Buenos Aires meets Brisbane at London Porterhouse

‘For the Love of Food’ was invited by Lucid Media to the launch party of London Porterhouse, an Argentinean style restaurant and bar located in Teneriffe.

When I think of Argentina, I think tango, hand-made shoes and empanadas. Some people might think football (soccer), red meat and the Mendoza wine region. Either way, it’s a fascinating country with a rich culture and a history steeped in political upheaval. During 2009, Al and I visited for a three-week tango immersion holiday. It was one of those holidays where you come home needing a holiday!

Whenever we hear the words Argentina or Buenos Aires, our interest is immediately sparked and it was no different when we received the invite for London Porterhouse.

The launch party focused around a selection of red and white Argentinean wines (London Porterhouse is the only Brisbane venue to stock these organic wines) and finger food representative of the dinner menu.

I started with a sparkling ‘Del Fin Del Mundo’ from Patagonia, followed by a ‘Tomero Torrontes’ from Salta, Argentina. I loved this wine. The bouquet, rose and jasmine and the taste, lychee and strawberries. Very easy to drink and would be a perfect match with something spicy or salty. Maybe that’s why I went back again and again for the deep-fried crumbed olives!

Al went with the reds, one from Patagonia ‘Newen Pinot Noir’ and the other from the Uco Valley ‘Serbal Malbec’. He enjoyed both, especially when paired with the Parilla grilled chorizo chipolas and the tender lamb ribs with coriander, cumin, lemon and garlic paste.

The tapas plates were all really enjoyable, especially the scallop ceviche in tiny pastry cups. I’ve heard on the grapevine that a must-have from the menu is the deep fried onion rings served with a maple syrup and chilli sauce.

It’s casual dining, perfect for a group of friends who like to share. All they need now is a Tango Nuevo music playlist to create the full Argentinean experience.

Open for drinks and dinner Tues-Thurs 5pm-10pm and Fri-Sat 3pm till midnight.
