Wine dinner at Mario at the dining room

Italian restaurant, Mario at the dining room has introduced a monthly wine and food matching dinner. $89 gets you five courses and I’m not talking delicate little morsels, I’m talking generous serves including five matching wines. Al and I went for an evening of good fun, good food and good company with Bob & Suzi.

By the end of course two, Suzi and I were full but we didn’t give up and triumphantly made it to the dessert course of tiramusi.  More on the sweet stuff later.

Here’s what we ate:

  • Stuffed zucchini flower with a blue cheese sauce
  • Antipasto plate, which included cured meats, tender calamari, battered whiting fillets, cheese fritter and salad leaves
  • Veal tortellini with a truffle cream sauce
  • Veal saltimbuca
  • Tiramisu with berries

The wine:

One of our favourite wines of the evening was the Mount Pleasant 2006  ‘Elizabeth’ Hunter Valley Semillon. It was zippy and fresh, full of citrus flavours. A complex wine that tasted way more expensive than the $18 it sells for at Vintage Cellars. This is definitely a wine to seek out for summer.

The other wine winner was the Mornington Peninsula, Crittenden Estate Pinocchio (love the label) 2009 Sangiovese. Selling for $20-$24 this was smooth and a lovely match with the saltimbuca.

A blend of Shiraz and Pinot Noir was served with the tortellini but for me the Shiraz spoilt what was a perfectly good Pinot Noir. From the Hunter Valley, the 2011 Mount Henry sells for $40 to $50. If you enjoy Shiraz you might find this an interesting wine.

I’m a sweet girl so my favourite was the McWilliams 2009 Morning Light Botrytis. Full of apricot and honeycombe, you can pick this up at Dan Murphy’s for $24. It was a perfect foil for the creamy, coffee-filled tiramisu, a definite winner at our table.

The other winning dish was the tortellini with truffle cream sauce. Incredibly fragrant and ohhhh so rich, Suzi and I could not finish our serves, but Bob happily poached what we had left.

Mention and special thanks must be made to David, restaurant manager and our wine waiter on the night. His good humour and clever jokes made for a memorable evening.
