Swampdog

One of life’s greatest food pleasures is beautifully cooked fish and chips. So often I’m disappointed by fish that tastes like its been frozen for years and flabby, lifeless chips, but fear no more.  Swampdog located on Vulture Street, South Brisbane, is a unique fish and chip experience.

The Swampdog motto is “good for you, good for me and good for the sea!”

Swampdog have developed a menu that is not only delicious and healthy but also sourced from sustainable fisheries. They take into consideration sustainability issues like food miles and recycling and have come up with a food business that really embraces what it means to be sustainable. They also have initiatives including recycling deep fry oil into diesel for their vehicles, using recycled materials in the shop fit-out (the tables are old wooden doors, including the door handles) to growing their own own herbs and using fully recyclable serving ware.

The menu changes daily depending on what’s available and it can be as simple as battered or crumbed Barramundi and chips $15.90 to servings of Seared Local Bonito with Wasabi Pea Mash and Wakame Salad $18.90. Other special dishes include Cajun style grilled spanish mackerel cutlets with avocado salsa, chips and salad $18.90 or how about a Tempura Dinner Pack which includes tempura prawn cutlets, tempura whiting with ginger prawn mousse, tempura fish, salt and pepper calamari and chips $19. There really is something for everyone including a Fish Burger for $8.90.

Al choose battered Flathead and I choose crumbed Barra, both with chips and a side serve of salt and pepper calamari.

The fish was so fresh and tasty and the handcut chips were perfect. Fluffy on the inside, crisp on the outside. The calamari was more pepper than salt but it did melt in the mouth. It was served with a small side of fresh salad and a lemon wedge. We sat outside, at the doornob tables, as I like to call them. At 4.30 pm on a Sunday it was a perfect pre-show meal but I imagine come 6 pm Swampdog would be buzzing with fish lovers. You can byo your own wine or beer but they also have a pitcher of homemade lemonade on the counter so you can pour yourself a free cup at any time. I think that’s a really nice touch and it was delicious!

If you’ve lost heart in finding the perfect fish and chip shop, then this may restore your faith in the worship of fish and chippery!

Swampdog is open 7 days from 12 noon – 8.30 pm. Enjoy!
